Michael Hartje DK5HH and Markus Heller DL8RDS will give an overview of what to expect in this year’s SDR Academy and also remind of the recently passed away contributors Adam Farson, AB4OJ/VA7OJ, and Kjell Karlsen, LA2NI.
Erwin Serlé PE3ES / F4VTQ: Fobos SDR by RigExpert. From small bandwidth SDR solutions with onboard data processing to very wide bandwidth and processing on connected general purpose hardware
An important design decision for a new SDR is the choice of where to perform the computationally intensive digital signal processing. Do that directly in the SDR hardware or send the data to an attached processor ? As the scan rate gets higher and the dynamic range deeper, the amount of data to be processed increases rapidly. Some designers choose to implement the DSP with an FPGA. Others send baseband signals or an audio signal to a computer. RigExpert relies on modern ICs that are capable of transferring a lot of data without pre-processing to a connected PC and having the calculations done there. Here we will look at some of the uses for this new SDR.

Ekki Plicht DF4OR will give a very fundamental introduction on SDR technology. His talk is meant to be a beginners‘ guide into the domain. With his talk we’re intending to address the mostly German speaking audience of the HAMRADIO fair, who have not yet made any step into SDR.

Prof. Dr. Christoph van Wüllen DL1YCF (and Laurence Barker G8NJJ): CW Bandwidth Optimisation
Christoph van Wüllen DL1YCF presents a setup to measure the CW bandwidth and to discover „spectral pollution“ by which signals deviate from the ideal shape. The talk will propose a way to bring CW signals into a good shape.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Jung DL9MJ: Teaching SDR for Amateur Radio License Exams
Matthias Jung DL9MJ was one of the main contributors to the new German license training and examination concept. The German Radio Administration Authority (BNetzA) is the first world wide to include questions on Software Defined Radio as part of the HAM Radio exams. This innovation also requires a thorough review of the teaching schedule. Matthias will present on how national Radio Administration Authorities together with the national Radio Clubs can successfully integrate SDR into the education and examination plans.
Adrian Musceac YO8RZZ: DMR Tier III base station – transceiver in software defined radio
Utilizing an RF multi-carrier waveform and a multiprocessing architecture on a Linux host system, the DMR Tier III base station transceiver is implemented based on existing software components like MMDVM, GNU Radio, QRadioLink, the DMR trunking controller, as well as Software Defined Radio transceivers like the LimeNET-Micro and the Ettus USRP. This talk will describe the technical aspects of the system and challenges encountered in the development process.
Laurence Barker G8NJJ (and Prof. Dr. Christoph van Wüllen DL1YCF): SATURN TX Composite Noise Improvement
This paper presents an investigation into TX composite noise in the SATURN Radio. We begin by identifying the problem, and potential approaches to investigate. We identify that FFT windows are a barrier to observing the noise level, but the Nuttall window provides sufficiently low sidelobes to permit investigation. We identify the DDS as the cause of TX noise, and investigate alternative DDS structures and CORDIC algorithms.
Rob Robinett AI6VN (and Paul Elliot WB6CXC): High Resolution Propagation Measurements Using a WSPRSONDE-8 beacon and a RX888 SDR
WSPR/FST4W spots sent by GSPDO beacons and reported by Wsprdemon GPSDO SDRs include doppler shift and frequency spreading information which can provide new insights into propagation paths and space weather events. This presentation will describe the Wsprsonde-8 beacon and RX-888 receiver which comprise a low cost system to produce such measurements.

Military communications stations using many setups with closely spaced antennas (Shipboard operation) can be overwhelmed by cosite problems. A typical problem is reciprocal mixing and blocking/ desensitization. This presentation explains the mechanism how these interferences occur and how for a practical systems they can be minimized. As a working example the modern SDR transceiver architecture is selected.
Rob Robinett AI6VN on behalf of Phil Karn KA9Q: An introduction to KA9Q-radio open source Linux SDR library
Current CPUs are powerful enough that they can process in real time a 16 bit / 128M sample per second from a direct sample SDR like the RX888 and demodulate hundreds of independently configured output streams. As an example of it use, Wsprdaemon sites using an RX888 attached to modestly powerful x86 Linux hosts can simultaneously record spots from all 2200-6m Ham bands while at the same time make IQ wav file recordings of all 10 WWV/CHU time station channels. Many other radio applications can now benefit from incorporating this open source software into their receive systems.

In this talk we discuss the latest updates from the GNU Radio project. There are many activities going on in the development front and exciting events in the coming months. We will share information about how to get involved and where we see the software headed in the future.
Aivars Straupe YL2GVC (and Yuri EU2AV): Anvelina SDR TRX – How to Squeeze the Maximum Out of Old Architecture
Anvelina has its origins in the SDR TRX HPSDR community products and their successors. Its main design lines are similar to the Apache Labs Angelia SDR TRX, but this resemblance is only superficial. The internal design has been significantly improved. There are no spurious signals, the self-noise is very low, a 16-bit DAC is used, among other enhancements.
